The Flora Women’s Mini-Marathon: June 7th 2010

Hello all,

Today I bring you news of the Flora Women’s Mini-Marathon…..this year I’ve decided to take part in aid of a very good cause which is very close to our hearts in this house – The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Many moons ago, when I was in secondary school, a good lot of us keen and eager young scholars took part. Even some of the guys dressed in drag for the occasion and raised a lot of money if I remember correctly. But, like the last time, and I hope you’re not too disappointed in me…..I won’t be running it, I’ll be walking it as walking is my thing!!

I’ve been threatening to take part in the mini marathon again for years but i decided that this was the year

and since we got Penny our dog (the bouncing bundle of golden retriever energy) we try to support Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind where we can….they do amazing work. Visit their site here for more information.
Stephen even got a gift of a sponsored puppy called Dexter from Penny for Christmas. He gets puppy updates from IGDB every couple of months on how Dexter is doing. As of December 2009, IGDB were forecasting a shortfall of €250,000 for the coming year which really struck a chord with me as the charity help not only the blind but people with other physical & mental disabilities and autistic children. (One of these children lives around the corner from me in Kilcock and has his own guide dog without which he and his mother could not have a semblance of a normal life).

So down to business.
I’ve opened up a fundraising page on mycharity.ie where you can donate to the cause, should you feel moved to do so. Any amount big or small is welcome and greatly appreciated. Just to reassure you, I do not see a cent of this money. All but a small percentage (3% processing & bank fee I think) goes straight to the charity. Don’t worry about using this site. It is secure and completely legitimate – I have done my homework….but if you are at all worried about donating on-line, I also have a sponsorship card signed and stamped by the charity which you can fill in and donate by cash/coins also (see photo attached).
