GIY or Grow it Yourself……hopefully!

Posted by Therese on Mar 13, 2010 in Family, Food, GIY-Grow it Yourself, penny, stephen

Check out our first attempts at growing our own vegetables!!

I have a feeling GIY (Grow it Yourself) will become a significant past time in this house…….anything as long as I don’t have to have anything to do with DIY or DIE as I like to lovingly call it!!!

We’re starting all our bits and pieces in propagator trays inside as it’s still quite cold and frosty for March but we’ve our walk in green house constructed which is holding our Potato Grow Bags (Maris Pipers – my favourite spud). Stephen has done a great job constructing our first raised bed down the end of the garden. He’s managed to fence it off too so Penny doesn’t get her grubby digging paws at it!!
So at the moment we’ve started our Runner Beans, Maris Piper Potatoes, Basil, Curly Parsley, Flat Leaf Parsley (I hope), Ordinary Tomatos, Beef Tomatoes, Plum Tomatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Peppers and Jalapeños. Here’s the proof:

Runner Bean Shoots

Our seedlings....peppers & jalepenos are yet to sprout!

Some of the veggies that'll be sown this week (weather permitting)

Our first Potato Bag...Maris Pipers yet to sprout

My Olive & Rosemary trees....the smell is amazing!

Our walk in Greenhouse....not glass but good to start with!

Stephen's brilliant handy work....our first raised bed.

And then Penny......Queen of all that she surveys :-)

Rye River Café – Kilcock

I Love to support local businesses where I can and when I find a gem I get very excited. Kilcock has a few eateries and more take aways than I can count on one hand, but Rye River Café, in my opinion, is one of the best. I had heard wonderful things about their Eggs Benedict on Brioche with home-made hollandaise sauce…yum. We thought it was closed so went elsewhere but I later discovered it only looked closed but it does in fact open until 2pm on Sunday.

The only bad thing about this visit was that they don’t take credit cards and we had to find a working ATM before we could return and eat. That aside we were impressed by the lovely spacious and homely décor. There are rustic looking shelves on the walls displaying jars of locally produced jam. They sit beside old teapots, lanterns and pots giving the place a granny’s kitchen farmhousey feel.
The waitress was very pleasant and helpful which is a plus straight away and she didn’t mind when she had

Not our actual Waitress ;-)

to come back twice for our order because we couldn’t decide what to have. This always happens to me….new restaurant + new menu = ages spent agonising over the choices. But secretly I quite enjoy that!

There are the usual breakfast suspects but the lunch menu and the specials (written on a blackboard outside the café and also behind the counter) really took our fancy.
We finally decided on the seafood chowder with brown bread between the two of us and a panini each. You choose your own fillings for the panini which I like – that was you get what you want. Loving Italian food the way that I do, I chose mozzarella, olives, parma ham, peppers and sun-dried tomatoes. The tomatoes were unavailable so I managed to substitute tomato relish instead. I can’t remember what Stephen got (sorry my love!) but he said my sandwich was much nicer……what can i say, I choose well!!

Seafood Chowder

Let me first tell you about the chowder. OH MY GOD! It’s the nicest chowder I’ve had in a very long time…..and for the east coast where good seafood is hard to come by we were pleasantly surprised. The soup was creamy without being heavy, the fish was in small bite size pieces, the prawns were tender (some places use cooked prawns and put them into the soup too early ensuring overcooked tough shrimp) and the flavour was seasoned beautifully with just the right amount of seafood flavour. What I loved was that the chowder was served cool enough that it could be eaten straight away but warm enough that it didn’t get cold half way through. THIS is how chowder should taste! The accompanying brown bread was fresh and delicious – a perfect match with the soup.
The panini were excellent too. Both were served with delightful side salads – not just your average lettuce leaf, slice of tomato & cucumber. Mixed lettuce with diced peppers and onions were married with a delicious dressing. After the fabulous chowder, I was finished half way through my sandwich, but I kept going because I couldn’t stop!!!

We both got delicious americanos…….some people thing ordering an americano is snobby as it’s “just a

LaVazza Coffee - Barista made

coffee”, but it’s not. It’s a shot of espresso, topped off with hot water. If a crema on the top (a caramel coloured aromatic foam) is present, it’s a properly made barista coffee and these were perfect examples. The coffee they serve is LaVazza and their staff is barista trained! Uuuuuuhhhhhhh!! The coffees stayed hot for the duration of our lunch too which leads me to believe that the cups may have been warmed before the coffee was put into them.
After a delicious and relaxing lunch a couple came in only to be told that they close at 2pm on a Sunday. They were apologetically turned away. It was only then that we realised that it was 2.30 and they were cleaning up to go home……and not a word had been said to us. We apologised for holding them up and were ensured of that it was fine. The bill came to €21…..

Excellent value for the quality of food. I made sure to pass my compliments on to the chef!
What I also loved about the menu was that the origin of the producers and suppliers of the food used in the Café is printed on the front of the menu. Also the fact that they use only local free range eggs is a real plus ++++
As of next weekend they’ll be opening in the evenings with a limited set menu – 2 or 3 courses. We had a read over the choices and we are so looking forward to trying the evening food. Short menus are usually executed well.
I will DEFINITELY be back :-)

What……amole??

Posted by Therese on Mar 11, 2010 in Food, Randomness

Whilst doing my shopping this morning, I could not for the life of me find any Hass Avocados. Only the good ole reliable pear Avocados were to be had….so I decided to get some ready made Guacamole instead. Better than nothing methinks…..well maybe not so!!!

Guacamole eh??!!

I have discovered in my trawling through the consumer aisles of all sorts of stores that it really pays to have quick look at the ingredients. This jar of guacamole dip caught my eye. “Looks a bit pale” said I to myself so I turned it over to look at the back. My flabber was gasted when I saw that not only was the first ingredient NOT Avocado but it was way further down the ingredients list than it should’ve been – 15th out of 24 to be precise :-)

What....amole??

As I scanned the ingredients I couldn’t actually find the word avocado!! On my third reading, there it was, Avocado…..wait for it……POWDER: 0.7% It’s one big Avocado conspiracy……..
“I can’t be reading this right” I thought, but I was!! I took photos to prove my point.

So people, it pays to make sure you’re getting what you pay for!

The Flora Women’s Mini-Marathon: June 7th 2010

Posted by Therese on Mar 5, 2010 in Animal Welfare, Dogs, penny

Hello all,

Today I bring you news of the Flora Women’s Mini-Marathon…..this year I’ve decided to take part in aid of a very good cause which is very close to our hearts in this house – The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Many moons ago, when I was in secondary school, a good lot of us keen and eager young scholars took part. Even some of the guys dressed in drag for the occasion and raised a lot of money if I remember correctly. But, like the last time, and I hope you’re not too disappointed in me…..I won’t be running it, I’ll be walking it as walking is my thing!!

I’ve been threatening to take part in the mini marathon again for years but i decided that this was the year

Penny helping me out by doing a spot of modelling!

and since we got Penny our dog (the bouncing bundle of golden retriever energy) we try to support Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind where we can….they do amazing work. Visit their site here for more information.
Stephen even got a gift of a sponsored puppy called Dexter from Penny for Christmas. He gets puppy updates from IGDB every couple of months on how Dexter is doing. As of December 2009, IGDB were forecasting a shortfall of €250,000 for the coming year which really struck a chord with me as the charity help not only the blind but people with other physical & mental disabilities and autistic children. (One of these children lives around the corner from me in Kilcock and has his own guide dog without which he and his mother could not have a semblance of a normal life).

So down to business.
I’ve opened up a fundraising page on mycharity.ie where you can donate to the cause, should you feel moved to do so. Any amount big or small is welcome and greatly appreciated. Just to reassure you, I do not see a cent of this money. All but a small percentage (3% processing & bank fee I think) goes straight to the charity. Don’t worry about using this site. It is secure and completely legitimate – I have done my homework….but if you are at all worried about donating on-line, I also have a sponsorship card signed and stamped by the charity which you can fill in and donate by cash/coins also (see photo attached).
Click here for my fundraising page.

I will be doing the mini-marathon no matter how much or how little I raise so please give what you can for this wonderful cause!

Happy Friday to you all!

Shimla – Clonsilla, Dublin 15

Shimla Indian Restaurant

Oh to have a birthday celebration break up the monotony of day to day life!!
It’s nice to have something to celebrate and as we were going for a meal with my man’s parents (his mammy’s birthday) we let them decide where we were to go for dinner.
They decided on Shimla in Clonsilla. It was closed for a good while for refurbishments after fire closed them down and they reopened recently. My man’s parent’s have been there more than once and wanted us to try it. It’s Indian food, we love Indian food so we were very excited!! However, excitement became disappointment as the evening progressed. The décor was lovely although the room was darker than I usually like. The atmosphere was good for a normally quiet night of the week.

The menu is very long. Long menus scare me. How can you cook so many meals well? Also, if a menu is long, it tends to lack information on cooking methods, ingredients and spiciness which some may find exciting, but not me. I like to be tantalised by a menu before I order. I don’t find any joy in looking at the name of a dish and not being given any idea what they heck it is or what’s in it. This flying blind thing works in some restaurants (ones that you can guess what a meal consists of eg: fish and chips) but in an Indian, Thai, Chinese, Italian or Spanish restaurant you rely on description, description, description.

The service was friendly but a little slow to clear plates and the waiters tended to reach across our food as we were eating without saying anything which, in my opinion, is rude. We were presented with poppadoms and various dips before our meal but, surprisingly, these dishes weren’t cleared away when the starters arrived, even though everything had been eaten. I got a stuffed pepper to start. I do not like green peppers. They’re insipid and they taste like unripe banana skins. So of course, the pepper came out and…… it was green. Sighs :-) No matter, I am a soldier…… so I soldiered on, as there are very few things I absolutely will not eat – I like to be proven wrong about an ingredient.

The lamb filling was sparse but pleasantly spiced. But the green pepper itself was bitter and oily. My King Prawn Madras wasn’t nearly as spicy as I had requested. I always ask for extra spice as I find some Indian restaurants can dumb down spice for the Irish palate, much like Italian food. They take one look at a little Irish girl asking for extra heat and they give me a “look”. The sauce was thin and there weren’t very many prawns in it (and they didn’t look big enough to be king prawns either). The bindhi (okra) was bland and the spinach in the dish made it slimy. A not at all pleasant texture. But the highlights were the Chicken Tikka Biyriani, Lamb Rogan Josh & the Chicken Dopiaza.

For side orders we got Peshwari naan (the menu described it as having sweetcorn inside so I was intrigued). There was no corn in the bread and it was lacking in flavour. But my Garlic naan was delicate and delicious. The Pilau rice was completely bland. There were spots of turmeric yellow here and there but it looked to me like the spice had been thrown in at the last minute in clumps (without any other spice) and hadn’t had time to infuse and flavour the rice. The wine was delicious. Two €22 bottles of Australian Syrah did the trick. I can only speak for myself of course so for my meal, the price did not match quantity or quality. In saying all that, I’d give Shimla a second chance to redeem themselves.

Jamie Oliver, Chef and International Nutrition Advocate, Named Recipient of 2010 TED Prize

Posted by Therese on Feb 25, 2010 in Food

If you haven’t seen it, you have to watch this video.
Jamie Oliver TED Talk
Love him or hate him Jamie Oliver is doing what he can to fight obesity in the UK, USA and around the world through education. He is a chef I very much admire!

He is doing his best to educate us, our children and our governments. I admire him because health and nutrition through food is something that he feels very passionate about and you can see and hear this when he speaks.

Its something I feel very passionate about too and I hope that some day, when I have my own children, I’ll be able to teach them about food, where it comes from, how to cook, and all about nutrition.
I just hope none of his kids ever end up overweight…..Imagine :-(

Quiznos

Posted by Therese on Feb 22, 2010 in Restaurant Reviews

Quiznos
Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. 01 6239144

Quiznos-Liffey Valley

Yesterday, on our way to buy all things “The Good Life” at B&Q (planters, propagators, seeds & compost) we decided it best to have some lunch before tackling ‘DIY HELL’ as I like to call it.
It hurts for me to go to places like this as I hate all things DIY, in fact I think I’m going to rename it DIE!!

So we stopped in at Liffey Valley Shopping Centre food court to get something to tide us over. Normally we’d hit Eddie Rockets but its quite expensive there for what you get and even though we love it, we hate the prices. Also, we were after something more healthy as an evening of delicious Curry was beckoning.
We settled on Quiznos in the food court. I was a Quiznos virgin. Stephen was not so he assured me the food is good and it’s inexpensive. Staring at the menu I could see he was right. It’s similar to Subway but seems (from my brief time there) to be a little healthier.

The Sandwich of the day, Mon-Sun, is only €3.99 which is not bad at all for what you get. Stephen ordered said sandwich which turned out to be the Hot Beefeater Tender roast beef drenched in au jus, fresh mushrooms, green peppers and onions with mozzarella cheese and Italian seasonings. I ordered the Turkey Bacon Guacamole Real turkey breast, hearty bacon, guacamole, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cool ranch dressing and Italian seasonings. We were given the choice of medium or large. We, trying to be restrained, order the medium subs. We were also offered a choice of white, brown or ciabatta bread. He chose brown while I went for the ciabatta. No surprise there.

Oh My God! My Sub was de…lic…ious! Stephen loved his too. (Even though I think mine was way nicer than his, but he’d never admit to that).
So we got 2 very well made, amply filled, yummy sandwiches and a bottle of ice cold sparkling water for €11! Not bad at all. You’d barely get a burger and fries for one person in Eddie’s for that.
There always seems to be seating outside Quiznos even when the food court is crazy busy, and the people working there were very pleasant indeed.
I’d recommend it. We left satisfied, feeling virtuous and still with money in our pockets :-)

Simple Mexican Fiesta Lunch

Posted by Therese on Feb 22, 2010 in Food, recipes

I find lunch can be terribly boring. I’m not a huge sambo fan as I don’t like soggy tomatoes or cheese between slices of flacid bread. Yeuch :-(
Soup is a favourite of mine but I get bored easily so the Vat of yummy Soup we’ve made on a Sunday can be wearing rather thin by Tuesday’s Lunch.
I do love to have something interesting and tasty for my bridge between brekkie & dinner. So if you have a pack of flour or corn Tortillas in the press, there’s no excuse for a boring lunch!

My favourite filling:
Grated Mozzerella Cheese
Chopped Red Chilli (or dash of Tobasco)
Chopped Red Onion
Torn Parma Ham
Salt & Black Pepper

1. Place tortilla on a pan – no fat required. Turn heat to medium. Sprinkle filling all over & place 2nd tortilla on top.

2. Press firmly with a spatula/fishslice and once heated through & tortillas are stuck together, flip & press firmly for another few minutes.

3. When tortillas are warmed through & cheese has melted cut like a pizza into 6. Serve with guacamole, salsa and/or sour cream or creme fräiche if your’re feeling especially hungry (as I always am).
